Everyday Mastery: How to Make Reading Stick and Build a Daily Habit

I’ve read countless books over the years, but for a long time, most of it didn’t stick. I’d finish a book, feel inspired for a few hours, and then forget almost everything. Sound familiar? A few months ago, I decided to change that. I wanted to make reading a daily habit ,not just for entertainment, but to learn, grow, and actually retain what I read. This is part of my journey toward Everyday Mastery, and here’s how I do it.

1️⃣ Make Reading a Daily Habit

Consistency beats intensity. Start small: even 10–20 minutes of actively engaging with a book per day adds up. Tie reading to an existing habit, maybe your morning coffee, commute, or bedtime routine.

Focus on one book at a time. Scattering attention across multiple books (or worse, scrolling social media while reading) reduces retention. Remember you don’t have to read the whole book if it does not resonate with you

2️⃣ Active Reading Techniques to Make What You Read Stick

The shift that changed everything for me was moving from passive reading to active reading:

  • Highlight and underline important passages.
  • Take notes in the margins — yes, it’s okay to write in books!
  • Use index cards or a notebook to jot down key ideas, reflections, and questions.
  • Ask yourself: “How can I actually apply this?”

Active learning is a cornerstone of Everyday Mastery, because it turns pages into actionable knowledge

3️⃣ The Science of Retention: Insights from Jim Kwik and Huberman Lab

Jim Kwik, brain coach:

  • Spacing out learning sessions improves memory retention.
  • Rewriting ideas in your own words helps encode them in long-term memory.
You can read more of his strategies here: Jim Kwik on memory and learning.

Andrew Huberman, neuroscientist:

  • Writing by hand strengthens memory encoding in the brain.
  • Reviewing notes periodically consolidates knowledge and improves recall.
Check out his research here: Andrew Huberman Lab.

In short: writing + revisiting = information that sticks.

4️⃣ Make Reading Actionable

Reading isn’t just about finishing a book. It’s about learning and applying:

  • Review your notes weekly.
  • Apply insights to work, projects, or personal habits.
  • Treat each book as a “toolbox” of ideas, not just entertainment.

This approach is what I consider true Everyday Mastery — turning knowledge into action.

5️⃣ Track, Celebrate, and Build Consistency

  • Track your daily practice, even 15–20 minutes counts.
  • Celebrate consistency over volume, small daily wins compound over time.
  • Once this routine becomes a solid habit, you can layer other growth habits on top.

Final Thoughts on Everyday Mastery and Reading

Building a daily learning habit is simple, but not always easy. Start small, engage actively, write it down, and revisit your notes. The combination of consistent practice + active engagement + science-backed memory techniques turns books from a fleeting experience into lasting growth
